How You Can Help

Bird Nursery Volunteers

Bird nursery volunteers work directly with and around the birds in our care. Tasks include preparing and dropping food for precocial baby birds and self-feeding juveniles and adults, hand-feeding altricial baby birds, and cleaning bird pop ups, enclosures & flight tents.

*Doing laundry, washing dishes, and other general cleaning tasks will ALWAYS be a part of your shift, no matter how trained you are.

Accessibility & Physical Requirements

Volunteering in our bird nursery and avian care areas is active and hands-on. Daily tasks may include bending, crouching, or kneeling to access floor-level pop-up enclosures, as well as reaching in to safely remove dishes, linens, etc.. Depending on the number of patients, these movements may be repeated many times during a single shift. Cleaning and maintaining flight tents may also require volunteers to duck under branches, maneuver around natural perching structures, and work in enclosed or uneven spaces. Some tasks also involve lifting and carrying items weighing approximately 10–15 pounds, such as incubators, towels, or small equipment. While we strive to support volunteers whenever possible, we are not always able to modify enclosure setups or tasks. We encourage prospective volunteers to consider these physical requirements and reach out with any questions to help determine whether this role is a good fit.
